As you will be aware, especially if you are living in the UK… Well, the UK is currently experiencing a heatwave. Of course, it is well known that British people moan about the weather; however, when it’s hot here in the UK, bloody hell, it’s hot! Our homes are not designed for high temperatures since air conditioning is uncommon due to its high cost. Even portable air conditioning units can be quite expensive. Now that my rant is over, let’s get back to our skincare, as it’s a real struggle for all skin types, but especially if you have oily skin.

During hotter temperatures, our skin naturally sweats, leading to excess oil and sweat. Plus, if you live within the city, the added pollution can leave a sticky feeling on your skin, which can become quite unbearable. So, let’s dive into this evening’s post and explore what can help manage oily skin types.
How To Manage Oily Skin
It’s always good to keep in mind the reason why our skin produces oil, as you don’t want to remove too much oil from your skin. The main reason is that the oils keep the integrity of our skin’s barrier intact, whilst also helping to prevent excess water loss. It’s also good to remember that age, hormones, genes and environment can play a huge factor in how overactive our sebaceous glands are. If you aren’t aware of what sebaceous glands are? Well, they are glands that produce sebum, which is an oily substance that lubricates the skin.
My skin type has changed slightly as I’ve transitioned from my teenage years into my late 20s, and now at 30. However, in my teens and early 20s, I had oily skin that was often affected by hormonal acne. Then, in my late 20s and currently, my skin has become a bit drier in some areas, although I still experience oiliness, particularly on my chin and especially my nose.
I’ve always preferred oil-free skin cleansers because I find they’re gentler on the skin than just using exfoliator scrubs, which you should still do once or twice a week.
Oil-free Cleansers
Oil-free cleansers are beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin types, as they help to remove excess oil, dirt and impurities without clogging, which can result in clearer skin, fewer breakouts and a reduction in shine.
Cleansing Balm
There’s a lot of benefits form using cleansing balm on skin during warmer weather, like if can effectively remove makeup – including stubborn, waterproof formulas without hash rubbing, impurities and excess oils – penetrate deep into your pores to remove dirt, pollution and excess oils, while also hydrating your skin, compared to the cleansing balm remove too much of the skins natural oils. I great for hydrating dry and sensitive skin but is also brilliant for other skin types – oily and combination.
Moisturising Cream
To avoid over-cleansing during the hotter and more humid summer months, as cleansing your skin can cause you to strip away your skin’s natural, healthy oils. Using an oil control moisturising cream and an SPF cream can help to prevent dehydration and overstimulation of the oil glands. Just ensure that if you have an oily skin type, opt for a light-texture, which will stop your skin from feeling heavy and clogged up.
Tinted Sunscreen
Tinted sunscreen is great for times when you just want to relax in the garden, but still look beautiful and natural whilst also keeping your skin protected, without having to spend an hour perfecting your makeup routine. Another good thing about using a tinted sunscreen is that it doesn’t dry your skin out and instead boosts your skin’s moisture.
