10 Helpful Moving Out Tips I Wish I Knew About Before

Moving out can be a daunting task, but with the right tips and tricks, it can be a smooth and stress-free process. Here are 10 helpful moving out tips that I wish I knew about before my last move:

1. Figure out your expenses and see what you can actually afford when you move out.

Moving out and living independently can be expensive, whether you’re settling into a small apartment or a spacious three-bedroom house. It’s crucial to review your regular bills beforehand to assess if you’re financially prepared for the big move. Make sure you have enough savings in the bank before making any commitments.

2. Practice “paying” rent and other added expenses for a few months.

If you are preparing to move out of your childhood home, practicing paying rent and other bills can be a helpful way to simulate what it will actually be like once you are on your own.

3. Be prepared to lower your expectation when viewing places.

It’s exciting to start looking at potential places, but you may already have some specific ideas for what your new place should look like. However, it’s important to remember that the space may not be as perfect as you wish, or it may not fit within your budget. You may also discover that some updates are necessary, such as a new kitchen, bathroom, or fresh coat of paint, which can be costly. It’s important to consider these factors when viewing potential places.

4. And when your inspecting, be sure to ask plenty of questions and check everywhere!

When I say “check everywhere,” I mean everywhere. Look in all the cupboards, check the water pressure and temperature of the hot water, see if there are any restrictions, and if you are renting, inquire about the rent amount. Remember, no question is stupid. It is much wiser to ask now, as it could save you money in the long run.

5. Double-check phone service, outlet situation and natural light.

It can be frustrating to create your ideal workspace, only to discover that there are no nearby outlets or insufficient natural light, particularly if you work from home.

6. Start buying the essentials as early as possible.

When you begin purchasing items for your new living space, it becomes apparent how costly kitchenware and linens can be. To manage your finances effectively, consider buying a few items each week or month, depending on your timeline. Additionally, take advantage of any sales that occur prior to your move.

7. Learn how to cook five or six quick and simple dishes that you can throw together even when it’s late and tired.

When living independently or with a roommate or significant other, it’s crucial to have a few easy-to-make meals readily available. These can come in handy on busy days and prevent the need to order expensive takeout.

8. Declutter all of your belonging before you start packing up.

To save time while packing, it’s helpful to go through every room, table, drawer, and cupboard. This is also an effective way to get rid of any unwanted items.

9. Prepare a bag or suitcase of things you’ll need in the first 24hrs.

Pack a first-night box: Pack a box with all the essentials you’ll need for your first night in your new home. This should include toiletries, bedding, and a change of clothes.

10. Remember to take breaks.

Moving is exhausting, so make sure to take breaks and rest when you need to. Don’t push yourself too hard. And if you’re struggling, don’t be afraid to ask for help.

By following these tips, your move should be a breeze. Good luck with your move!
