WHAT IS YOUR SKIN TYPE?
Before jumping straight into buying loads of different skincare products, you first need to discover what skin type you have. You can determine your skin type through how your skin feels or presents itself.
- Normal: Smooth textured, being balanced of neither dry nor oily.
- Dry and sensitive skin: Lack of moisture, usually the skin has a dull appearance.
- Oily skin: Your skin might appear shiny or feel greasy, resulting in an increased chance of acne and breakouts.
- Combination skin: A mixture of oily skin in some places and dry skin in others.
START YOUR SKIN ROUTINE WITH GENTLE CLEANSER
After determining your skin type, it’s time to begin your skincare routine. Who doesn’t love glowing skin?!
Incorporate a good cleanser, whether you opt for a foam, gel, or cream into your routine, always make sure it suits your skin type and is within your budget, as you don’t have to spend a lot on fancy brands.
Exfoliating your skin is good for removing dead skin cells but should only be done once a week and not every day, as it could leave your skin feeling rough and won’t help if you suffer from teenage acne.
IT’S NOW TIME FOR TONING
The next step in your routine is toning, which should always be done once you’ve finished with your gentle cleansing lotion, although this is optional in your routine.
You probably now wonder, is there any point in using a toner? Well, the simple answer is yes. A toner is water-based and will help prep your skin for your next step, such as serums or moisturisers.
Another thing to know about toners is that they help to get rid of excess oil, dirt, and makeup, close pores, and leave your skin feeling brighter and more refreshed.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING A SERUM
Serums can be used as an everyday product, whether that be a Vitamin C serum, Hyaluronic Acid, Salicylic Acid or any other ingredients. A serum should be applied before moisturising and it absorbs very quickly, so it won’t leave your skin feeling greasy. The benefit of using a serum is that it will leave your skin feeling super smooth and soft, especially if you have sensitive skin.
CREAM FOR YOUR UNDER EYE
When I was younger, I don’t think I ever heard of an under-eye cream, let alone ever thought to use one and now at 29 I can’t live without it. If you haven’t heard of a product for your under-eye, don’t worry! However, I would say look into getting a pot, whether that being a cream or a serum. We tend to forget our under-eye area but it is still just as important as the rest of our face.
Did you know that applying an eye product can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, bags, puffiness and sagging as we get older? But don’t worry if you’re below 25 years old, because you have a few years yet.
When you apply the eye product, gently massage the product around you under the eye in a circular motion as this helps to improve the circulation around the area. This is for the over 25s, do you sometimes look in the mirror and look a little tired no matter how much sleep you’ve had? Well, maybe it’s time to give your under-eye a little care and attention and incorporate it into your daily routine.
NOW IT’S YOUR FAVOURITE TIME – MOISTURISING
The majority of people who aren’t into skincare will at least use moisturiser before applying makeup. Are you aware that you should moisturise every day and even sometimes multiple times a day, especially if you have sensitive skin or extreme dryness? You usually experience this during the winter months due to cold weather.
When you moisturise your skin, you find that your skin will feel hydrated and super smooth. Also, skin feeling smooth makes a good base to apply makeup, as there’s nothing worse than applying foundation or concealer to dry skin, causing the makeup to become crusty.
Regardless of skin type, everyone should moisturise their skin but also find out what works for you and apply it in the morning, evening or whenever you like.
AND NOW FOR THE PRIMER
Primers are like the gods of makeup routine, as they can help your makeup appearance and for it to stay in place for long periods, instead of melting off halfway through the day or event.
A primer should be applied before you start putting on your makeup, also you can get primers that are specifically for the eye area. There are plenty of different primers that combine different with foundation – from water-based to oil-based. However finding the right one for your skin type can be a little tricky, but don’t stress, I’ve got you!
- Hydrating Primer: This is an oil-based primer which is good for people with dry skin, as it’s full of ingredients that will moisturise your skin, to prevent your makeup won’t look cakey.
- Illuminating Primer: This is the key to the dewiest skin, as this primer will add a subtle glow to your skin and is great on all skin types.
- Matte Primer: This is good for when you have oily skin, as it helps to control oil! Matte Primers can also help to blur your pores, as well as help your makeup to stay on longer.
- Colour Correcting Primer: If you are suffering from redness or dark eyes, then using a colour-corrector primer can help balance and neutralise your uneven skin tone.
SPF IS NOT JUST FOR THE SUMMER MONTHS
SPF should always be used whenever you are sunbathing or as an everyday product to ensure that your skin from UV and sun damage. After all, who wants wrinkles when you’re younger? Not me! And if you are outside for long periods, then SPF products need to be applied multiple times a day, even if the weather isn’t hot and sunny. For good results, an SPF moisturiser must be applied before foundation and powder products because your skin can fully absorb its important properties, protecting your skin against UV-A and UV-B rays.
